Where Children sits on the path
What Children’s classes are
Children’s classes are age-specific Tae Kwon Do that teaches children to follow directions, take turns and stand tall. New students start in a White belt class for ages 4 to 6.
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art. Many parents search for it as karate; if you have been looking for karate for a 4-, 5- or 6-year-old, this is the class to ask about. Chung TKD teaches kids only.
What your child learns
- Focus and coordination, in routines built for how 4- to 6-year-olds learn
- Kicks and blocks, and the first form, Chun-Ji
- Listening, taking turns and caring for training partners
- Testing for the next belt when they are ready, with the family watching
What changes as they progress
Each belt marks a stage with its own expectations for attendance, forms, technique, sparring drills, breaking and terminology, and the expectations grow with the child.
Between colors, instructors track progress in smaller steps. Children move up to Youth at 7, or sooner if their instructors think they're ready.
An after-school option is available for enrolled students; ask us when you visit.
How belt testing works here
Below brown belt, your child tests when their instructors say they are ready. From brown belt on, tests are on set dates.
- Families have a seat and watch.
- 9th-Dan Grandmaster Howard Chung runs and oversees every test, with an instructor helping the kids.
- Tests get progressively more demanding.
- Black belt tests are major events.
The character side
Children’s classes practice taking turns, caring for training partners and standing tall.
Along the way, children practice standing still, listening, trying again after getting it wrong, and helping a younger student tie a belt.
