Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art, and many parents search for it as karate. For a child, the class itself usually matters more than the name of the style.
At Chung TKD, the youngest children start with following directions, balance and first kicks. Youth classes teach forms, sparring and self-defense, and sparring gear is needed only from Blue belt.
What to ask any school
These questions work for a Tae Kwon Do school or a karate school. Here is how Chung TKD answers them:
- Is the class for my child’s age? Pee-Wee is for 2 to 3½, Children for 4 to 6, and Youth for 7 to 13. Older kids are placed by Grandmaster Chung after a first class.
- Are classes grouped by belt? Children and Youth classes are 35 minutes, grouped by belt and age. New students start in a White belt class for their age.
- How do belts work? There are nine belt colors, from White to Black; what each color means is its own article.
- Is it only kids? Chung TKD is a kids-only school, and parents are always welcome to watch.
- When do we talk about membership? After a first class, never before.
